4 important things you need to know about Self Defence

Self defence is a crucial skill that every person should be familiar with. Whether you're walking alone at night, traveling to an unfamiliar place, or simply navigating through everyday life, it's essential to be prepared for any potential danger that may come your way.

Effective self defence requires awareness, planning, training, and using everything around you including your voice.

The good news is that self-defense is not only about physical strength; it's about being aware of your surroundings and having a plan in place in case of an emergency.

Be aware. Look up from your phone to scan your surroundings from time to time.

The first step in self defence is to be aware of your surroundings. This means paying attention to the people and activities around you and being mindful of anything that seems out of place. You should also be cautious when using technology such as your smartphone. If you're completely distracted by a screen you become a much easier target. Keep in mind this is specific to being in public places (as opposed to being at home or in a familiar safe place).

Another important aspect of self-defense is to have a plan in place in case of an emergency. If you're travelling to a new place, knowing the location of the nearest police station can be helpful. Having a trusted friend or family member that you can call for help is always a good idea. In situations where you are indoors, make a habit out of always knowing where the exits are.

In addition to being aware of your surroundings and having a plan in place, it's also essential to have some basic self-defense training. This can be as simple as taking a self defence class or practicing techniques such as blocking and striking with a partner.

Self defence training is crucial. Sharpen your response time and know the most common attacks.

Keep in mind that the most effective way to learn self defence is through consistent training and conditioning. Working with an instructor who has a great understanding of the physics, hinge points of the body, the most common attacks, and quick effective defence techniques is the real key to success. With training and practice, you can develop the confidence and skills you need to defend yourself in a dangerous situation. We offer self defence training in all of our programs, if you're interested in learning from great instructors you can check out our programs here.

It's also important to understand that self-defense is NOT just about physical strength. It's also about using your mind and being aware of your limitations. If you find yourself in a situation where you're being threatened, it's important to remain calm and think clearly about your options. You may also want to consider using your voice to draw attention to the situation and scare off the attacker, or running away if possible.

Strength is not everything. Training your muscle memory for quick response and action will provide a huge advantage.

Finally, self-defense is not just about being prepared for the worst-case scenario; it's also about taking care of your overall well-being. This means staying in good physical shape, eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of rest, and avoiding situations that may put you in danger. So take the time to invest in your safety and well-being, and learn how to defend yourself today.
